March Snow in Las Vegas

Jeremy Duensing, Transportation Product Manager

March can be a deceiving time of year as temperatures warm into ranges not seen since last Thanksgiving and, in some locations, grass can be visible for the first time in months.March is also the time of year that winter maintenance personnel know that Mother Nature can still pack quite a wintery punch before warmer weather takes hold across the country.

Just ask travelers around Las Vegas, Nevada today who have been treated to a combination of snow, hail, rain and windy conditions since late Monday night.Snow was reported in the southern part of the city of Las Vegas around noon today capping off what already has been a cold and windy day found across the strip thus far. A foot of new snow, impassible road conditions and cars sliding off the roadways have been reported in the higher elevations of west of Las Vegas along I-95 since Tuesday morning.

Some of the highest storm snowfall totals can be realized during the month of March as the weather pattern gets amplified and advancing warmer air clashes with the cold air that had been in place spinning up intense spring snowstorms. With most maintenance budgets squeezed and salt supplies already exhausted (just ask the east coast), it is imperative that the remaining fuel, material and labor resources are used to their fullest potential to finish out this active winter season.

By utilizing the very latest observations and most accurate weather forecast available from Telvent DTN, maintenance personnel can better prepare for what is still to come this spring snow season.

We invite you to take a free 7-day trial - click on the "Trial and Download" link at the top of this page to see how Telvent DTN can help you with your maintenance decisions.
