Portland Pipe Line Realizes Cost Savings Using Telvent Power Optimization System

Energy management application helps control oil pipeline energy and demand costs; supports operations sustainability

June 2, 2010 – Telvent (NASDAQ: TLVT), the IT company for a sustainable and secure world, announced today that the Portland Pipe Line Corporation (PPLC) has deployed Telvent's Energy Management Application Suite — Power Optimization. By simulating the company's oil pipeline system, the Telvent solution identifies the lowest-cost pump configuration and saves money by reducing power consumption which is typically one of the company's largest operational costs, while helping PPLC to meet their operating schedules safely and securely.

Portland Pipe Line, headquartered in South Portland, Maine, is a vital transportation link between offshore crude oil supply and the Canadian refinery regions in Quebec and Ontario provinces. PPCL chose the Telvent Power Optimization application to integrate with its existing Telvent OASyS supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system and uses real-time operational data from the SCADA system to calculate the pipeline's current energy costs.

The Telvent software also considers contract structures at different locations, demand costs, spot pricing rates and time-of-day rates. It not only provides controllers real-time operating cost but also verifies the cost impact of operational changes before making them in the field. It recommends the pump selection that reduces operational costs while maintaining operations safety – making it a valuable daily operational tool for Portland Pipe Line.

PPCL chose Telvent's Power Optimization because its staff is able to manage the system. In addition, it is accessible to the entire corporation, enabling users across the business to make confident decisions with regards to operational integrity to increase energy efficiency, optimize batch scheduling, lower costs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Telvent's CEO, Ignacio Gonzalez, said, "This project further demonstrates the value of Telvent solutions as providing the most advanced technology available to yield costs savings and support sustainability of oil pipeline operations."
