We have been working with Microsoft on its Smart Energy Reference Architecture (SERA) technology and also serve on its SERA advisory council. SERA addresses technology integration throughout the full scope of the smart energy ecosystem — helping utilities to test and align their information technology with their business processes to create integrated utilities. By identifying architecture that can build a solid foundation, SERA helps utilities develop their own smart energy infrastructures.
SERA also allows utilities to easily integrate Telvent functionality on top of the Microsoft platform. This creates an opportunity for utilities to gather business critical information from multiple systems, which can then be easily integrated into their networks. Utilities benefit from this functionality by gaining information that can be efficiently shared company-wide.
For example, by allowing for open technology and easy integration of Microsoft and Telvent products, utilities can navigate rapidly changing smart grid dynamics and create secure networks. This functionality is scalable, so it can be implemented by utilities of all sizes, and easily expands to meet growing needs. The end result is an integrated network that not only maximizes network efficiencies, but also creates a lower total cost of ownership.
Microsoft SERA provides tools and examples to guide both information and operations technology staff. It also addresses maturity models, advanced analytics, cloud computing and security. Included are concrete examples of deployment and use of standard architectures, as well as supply patterns that enhance speed, reduce risk, and drive down implementation and sustainment costs.
