July 8, 2010 - Telvent (NASDAQ: TLVT), the IT company for a sustainable and secure world, announced today the inauguration of New England's first Open Road Tolling (ORT) system at the Hampton Mainline Toll Plaza in New Hampshire. Telvent has implemented successfully its innovative Telvent SmartMobilityTM Tolling, designed in line with company's commitment to developing and promoting smart technologies for the transportation sector.
With the goal of relieving the infamous I-95 summertime traffic congestion, and allowing drivers to travel through at free flow speeds, New Hampshire DOT awarded to Telvent, in 2009, a contract for the implementation of New England's first Open Road Tolling system.
The Open Road Tolling system implemented by Telvent, based on its latest innovation for the tolling sector; Telvent SmartMobilityTM Tolling a management solution for highway and tolls that enhance the efficiency and accuracy of toll operations, reducing travel times and minimizing drivers´ and workers´ inconvenience. In addition, Telvent has installed its Telvent SmartMobilityTM Remote Operations and Maintenance System (ROMS) to improve maintenance and operations efforts, enhancing long term system reliability.
The system opened to the public on Memorial Day Weekend, one of the busiest long weekends of the year, for a full scale test, and subsequently was permanently opened on June 17th. The result was a successful implementation with the ORT system processing nearly five times as many vehicles as the conventional cash toll lanes and more than a 52 percent increase in traffic throughput than a dedicated E-ZPass lane where drivers must slow down to pass through.
"Telvent has done an excellent job on the implementation of the ORT system at Hampton Plaza, we are delighted and proud of how well Open Road Tolling is working". explained Chris Waszczuk, Bureau of Turnpikes Administrator. "This project will make a tremendous difference for drivers, improving their safety, relieving congestion, particularly during peak tourism seasons, and will help to reduce harmful emissions from idling vehicles".
Telvent´s Chief Executive Officer, Ignacio Gonzalez, stated, "Smartmobility is Telvent´s answer to the challenge of improving mobility and air quality within urban environments thus maintaining its commitment to provide a more sustainable model. We are pleased to help NHDOT to improve mobility, while assuring accurate and reliable toll operations management".
This success further establishes Telvent´s position in the toll market as an innovative technology leader in electronic toll collection systems. The company also was recently awarded contracts to implement an ORT system on the SR 520 Bridge in Seattle, WA, as well as to expand the Pocahontas Parkway 895 electronic toll collection system in Virginia. The company has successfully completed other electronic tolling projects for the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority, MTA Bridges and Tunnels, and Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority.
