RealTime Automation Solutions For Hydro

Soluciones Hidro New challenges and opportunities provided by Electric Utility industry deregulation and the need to retrofit and upgrade hydroelectric generation control systems are accelerating the adoption of sophisticated and robust control and real-time information management systems.  Telvent's electric Energy Management System (EMS), Hydro Applications, and Substation Integration Systems have met this challenge head on.  Below is a brief summary of Telvent’s solutions for Hydro.

Energy Management System (EMS)

EMS applications critical to hydro operations include Automatic Generation Control (AGC), Unit Commitment, (UC) and Interchange Transaction Scheduling (ITS).  Telvent provides these applications, which are integrated with SCADA, Substation Integration Systems, and utility specific hydro operational applications.  Every system is implemented to meet the stringent requirements of the utility.  Special consideration is given to security and reliability of the system and its communications infrastructure, in order to meet NERC requirements.

Hydro Applications

Every hydro facility has its own characteristics and unique set of requirements.  Telvent’s application engineers are skilled in providing specific hydro solutions to meet those requirements.  Solutions can be provided for individual dam installations or can be designed for multiple dam installations along a single river.  Some of the applications that are typically provided include:
  • Gate control
  • Advanced flow modeling
  • Optimization algorithm for minimal water consumption with maximum power output of available units
  • Interface to Flood Control System

Utilizing the middleware architecture of the OASyS DNA SCADA platform, new applications can be added without requiring modification to the existing system software.

Substation Integration Solutions (SIS)

The Telvent family of Intelligent Terminal Units (ITUs) meets today’s engineering challenges while providing a platform for creating advanced automation applications and expandability for the future.

Each ITU contains our complete protocol library, which combined with embedded IEC 61131 compliant PLC logic, provides the ability to easily add custom applications.  Depending on the requirements, the ITUs can be installed separately or can be used to retrofit existing legacy RTUs in the field.  Telvent has many previously engineered solutions for retrofitting older RTUs.  Each solution is designed to minimize field installation time by reusing cabinets and as much of the legacy equipment as possible.  Every attempt is made to optimize installation efficiency, without having to remove the existing field wiring, thus minimizing the required field checkout time.

Project Management

Our project expertise covers all aspects of hydroelectric engineering: from the lowest level of field works (acquisition of analog/digital signals and serial communication with IEDs and power plant equipment, such as temperature registers, alarms switchboards, digital protective devices, and substation equipment in general); to specific generation control equipment (generation unit, common services, hydroelectric systems, substation, and start and stop sequences programming, etc.); to the top level advanced control functions (including AGC, telecontrol, and dispatching).

Telvent’s real-time automation control and information management solutions provide improved security, reliability, and increased operational efficiency of existing hydroelectric generation facilities.  With over 30 years of worldwide experience, Telvent is the right choice for your automation needs.  Specializing in both products and real-time systems expertise, we can provide standardized solutions, or develop customized solutions that ideally suit your business requirements.
